Earn Professional Teacher Certification in Special Education. This program is designed for students who have no existing certification and would like to become a professionally certified teacher in Special Education Pre K – grade 12.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent’s Master of Science degree programs offer values-centered curricula and real-world experience. Upon successful completion of this program and required Content Specialty Test for Students With Disabilities, students will have fulfilled the academic requirements for certification in Special Education (Pre-K – Grade 12), as well as their initial area of certification.
This program blends vital academic content with practical classroom teaching experience and will take you through everything you need to meet the requirements for Professional NYS certification in your initial area of certification and Special Education, including test prep for your Content Specialty Test.

Who is it for
The M.S. in Special Education program at UMSV is an accelerated program designed for working professionals or recent college graduates who hold a valid NYS initial teaching certification and need a master’s degree to earn their professional certification.

The SWD (All Grades) certificate permits individuals to teach students with disabilities in pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 in New York State public schools. Teachers who hold this certificate cannot teach students with disabilities from ages 0-2 years, but can teach students with disabilities from ages 3-4 years (e.g., children in Universal Pre-Kindergarten programs)
Our program is offered 100% online so you can learn from the convenience of your own home, with classes held on weekends so that you can continue to work while you earn your degree.
Our cohort model allows you to stay together with the same group of students throughout the program. Students receive a full course schedule upon admission, so you never have to worry about choosing and registering for courses.
